Winter Shape Sort

Saturday, January 5, 2019
I wanted to share with you a fun winter themed shape sort!

This is a fun way to review the four basic shapes while getting up and moving around the room.
Hide or hang up the small shape pieces then, have your kiddos go around the room collecting the ones they find.  Have them bring their pieces to your meeting area and go around calling on kiddos to tell you what they found while putting it on the snowball sorting mat.

You could also put this in a center and have students sort the shapes using the sorting mat!
Grab it HERE if you would like to use this in your classroom! :)

Gingerbread Roll and Color

Monday, December 3, 2018
We are still going strong on our gingerbread themed activities!

Today, we did a fun roll and color activity!  We have done these before where we color after we roll, but I wanted to reuse them as many times as I could so I laminated the worksheet!

Then, we used pom poms to cover each number after we rolled our dice.

I have included another sheet that is roll and trace.  Your kiddos will roll and trace the number they get.
Grab it for free HERE!

Apple Week Activities

Wednesday, September 12, 2018
I wanted to share some fun apple themed activities with you!

The beginning of the year in kindergarten is BUSY!  Busy learning how school works and throwing in some academics when you can!
Sometimes learning includes strengthening motor skills.  I have a fun activity that works on just that.
Ripping paper is great practice and can strengthen their little hands.

Another thing we are working on is their name!  I created these letter apples and name plates to help with checking that their name was spelled correctly.
A couple fun math activities were sorting and making patterns with the apples.

I also had fun hiding apples around the room.  We would find them and count how many we found.

Another idea is to hide the letters in their name and have them find the letters in their name.
To make apple letters a little more challenging, than just spelling their names is to use it with sight words or CVC words.

Community Helpers Garbage Truck Shapes

Wednesday, September 5, 2018
I found a cute pin on Pinterest for my community helpers unit.  I thought it would be a great activity for MATH.  Yes, MATH!

I created a FREEBIE that can be used during your community helper unit for your math block.

You can cut out the shapes yourself out of construction paper or you can print the templates on various colors have have your kiddos cut them out.

The wheels can be printed on white and then colored black or you can cut out the wheels yourself.

How cute!?
If you wanted to add more to it, you could have your kiddos write simple about garbage trucks do on the back.

Shape Match Sheets

Sunday, July 29, 2018
Those first few weeks of kindergarten can feel like you are in "survival mode".  I created these simple shape match sheets to help your kiddos cut, match, and glue.

I would use these during those first few weeks during math time.  I usually do something math while we practice our rituals and routines.  This would be a great addition to practice "how we work at our tables during math time".
Grab it HERE or click on the picture below!

Snowman Buttons

Thursday, January 15, 2015
I have a fun and easy to create math center!
I made a handful of big snowmen and about 20 hats. Each hat had a number on it.  This is where those buttons will come in.
My kiddos would pick a hat and put it on their snowman.

Then, they counted out button to match their number.
The hats also could have addition or subtraction problems on top and then the kiddos will have to show the answer with their buttons.

Story Problem Activity

Thursday, November 7, 2013
Almost Friday!  Check out this fun story problem activity we did!  I found these foam leaf stickers at the Dollar Tree!

I created 3 different worksheets that focused on subtracting.  I had all the kiddos color their tree.
Then, they added their leaves.  Our story problem was about how many leaves fell on the ground and how many were still left on the tree.
A nice, blurry picture of all three worksheets...sorry! haha!
One only focused on writing the equation, one was just filling in the blanks with the numbers and writing the equation, and one was writing the whole problem on your own!
These worksheets are saved on my computer at school, so I will attach them tomorrow! :)

Five for Saturday!

Saturday, October 5, 2013

My week always seems to go so great and fast, but then Friday comes and I feel like it is the longest day ever!!
1.  My second graders are going to see Charlotte's Web at the children's theater next week.  My poor first graders are still trying to understand it is a 2nd grade field trip only.  One little one's mom came in with a note saying she could go and I had to explain it was only for 2nd grade :(.  The life of a split classroom!  To get ready for the play we did a welcome web! Greeting each other and making a web in the process.
2. My first graders are finding combinations of numbers.  We did a fun little activity where I gave each kiddo a Post it Note with a number on it and matching number of cubes.  They found their combinations and wrote it down on the back.
3.  I had my 2nd graders do it too!  My firsties were testing in the computer lab, so it was just me and the 2nd graders.  Some of my second graders REALLY struggle with this, so it was a good practice!
4.  After one of my guided reading groups a little one hands me this...  How much every teacher should be making :)
5.  If you missed the blog hop earlier this week, head over to my post here and hop around to grab some freebies.  At the end there is a giveaway to win a $35 Target gift card!

Subtraction Games

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
It is SPRING!!  Yay!  The Spring weather can come any day now! :)  We have been working on subtraction in math for the past week and I wanted to share a couple of fun games that my kiddos LOVED! Yesterday, we played MUSICAL CHAIRS!  Our lesson was about subtracting from 8, so I had 8 chairs out and we played then subtracted the chairs after each round.

The second game we played today and it included a DICE!  *Insert children screaming and cheering*  Yes,  a dice is THAT exciting!  We were subtracting from 9 today and rolled a dice to figure out what number we would subtract from 9!  My kiddos all took turns rolling and creating their subtraction problem.  I don't have pictures, but we did it as a whole group and I might make it into my next math center!

Hope everyone enjoyed their first day of Spring!

Also, my bloggy friend and real life friend (serious, we teach at the same school!), Irene, from Learning with Mrs. Leeby is hosting her 400 Follower Giveaway!  She rocks!
