Fizzy Colors

I wanted to share a fun science activity that works inside on a rainy day or outside on a warm sunny day!

Fizzy Colors is easy prep and kept my little guy engaged for awhile.

All you need to get started is baking soda, food coloring, and vinegar. 

I placed a drop of food coloring all over a baking sheet. 

Then, I covered each drop with the baking soda.

After they are all covered take an eye dropper of vinegar and put drops of it on each pile of baking soda.  As it fizzes the colors will start to appear!

Once they were all done fizzing my little guy took his dropper and started mixing the colors to make new colors.
We went through more vinegar than I expected, but I did have a lot of baking soda over each colored drop.
I hope your little ones enjoy this as much as mine did :)

5 Senses Card Match

We are spending our week in science going over our 5 senses to prepare us for our first science kit next week!
I made some 5 senses cards for my kiddos to use for this activity.  Each card has a picture of the sense and the name.

I gave each kiddo their own set of cards to cut out.  Once they were done they laid them out on the carpet.

I took my favorite set of Target Dollar Spot cards out to use for this activity.  Any picture set of picture cards will work.

I held up a picture and my kiddos held up one of their five senses cards that matched.  For example, I held up a picture of a radio and my kinders picked out the card that said hear on it!

Parachutes!

Today was a great day!  I was reunited with my better half...IRENE!  It has been like a month!  We met up for a happy hour with some other fellow co-workers!  I so needed this!  So many crazy stories-the life of a teacher, right!? :)

One last beer on the patio!  We totally lucked out on the nice weather!

In science we are learning about air and weather.  Yesterday we made parachutes!  I thought I would share because it was the easiest thing EVER and the kiddos were loving it!  This could of turned out chaotic, but it was calm and only one kiddo tried standing on the table to test their parachute...phew!

Supplies- napkin, stickers/tape, string, paperclip

Tape each string to the end of the napkin using the stickers.

Tie the string around the paperclip using the sticker.

Throwback Thursday!

Now onto the Throwback Thursday linky, hosted by Cara from The First Grade Parade!  I haven't been blogging as long as some of the fabulous bloggers out there, but one of my favorite activities I blogged about was our Dino Dig!  I think it is because I remember doing it when I was in school...like 20 years ago...haha!

We are learning about everything dinosaur this week!  Since our science lab was cancelled today, I had my kiddos go on their own "dino dig"!  We pretended to be paleontologists and dug up some "bones"!  In kindergarten terms, everyone had a chocolate chip cookie and used a toothpick to dig out the chocolate chips...aka dinosaur bones!  My kiddos LOVED it!

Cloudy Day

We are learning about clouds in science, so today we did a little cloud experiment!  I know you have probably seen this on pinterest, but it was super fun for my kiddos to see the "rain" fall from the clouds!

A Day at the Zoo...Kind of

Today my kiddos' unit projects were due for our animal unit in Language Arts!  At the beginning, of every unit we have a project due at the end of our unit!  It is a great way for the parents to get involve and help their little ones with a fun project!  This unit each kiddo had to make a diorama of a zoo animal!  The first thing we did was set them all out and took a walk through our "zoo"!  My kinders just LOVED this!  It let them see what everyone did and let the kids show off their work!  After our trip to the zoo, each kiddo got to present their diorama!  They LOVE presenting their work, so it was a fun part of our day! :) Check out  a few of the cute projects!  They did great!

The light blue border in this diorama is supposed to represent the waves!  So clever!:)

Gummy Worm Lab

Let me set the scene-I tell my kiddos we are going to do a science lab!  They start asking questions- "Are we going to the science lab upstairs?" We are a science based school so we have a science lab with a teacher who teaches our kids experiments every couple of weeks!  But we were not heading up to the science lab we were going to do our lab right in our classroom!  I told them it involved worms!  The reactions started coming- "Oh, no I am NOT touching a worm!" "EW!"  I finally show them what we would be using and hold up a bag of GUMMY WORMS!  They instantly wanted to touch them AND eat them! ;)  We did our experiment as a class and discovered things about worms, but in a fun way where we didn't have to touch worms!  Check out our pictures from the experiment! :)
We drew our worm (some traced...so cute), measured it, drew its skin, counted it's segments, and finally ATE IT!  Their favorite part! :)

After our lab, I told my kinders to go home and tell their parents they ate a worm at school!  They thought it was hilarious!
P.S. Pink Sparkles (the fish) is still ALIVE! Yess!
