Sight Word Passages

Friday, June 14, 2019
Sight words can be very tricky to learn and remember.  I always spend a lot of time reviewing, reviewing, reviewing them as we learn them.

I am always thinking of fun ways to practice the sight words we learn.  We sing about them, chant the letters in them, and read books with them in it.

I have created a fun way to practice these words that is perfect for ALL levels of readers.
You can put these in your literacy centers, use them during guided reading, or use it during writing.
Each passage uses short sentences that focus on a sight word.

Your kiddos will read the passage, circle the sight word, read the sight word, then write the sight word.
The best part of these passages is that the kiddos that aren't quite reading yet can still search through the passage to find the sight word.

Finding sight words while you read is a great reading skill and will help those little ones become better readers too!

Instead of using a pencil or marker, you can use a highlighter.  Have you ever given a kindergartner a highlighter?  It's like Christmas morning ;)

St. Patrick's Day Writing Sensory Bin

Wednesday, March 6, 2019
I'm back with a fun writing center idea for you!

I have been really into sensory bins lately, so I took the word card from my St. Patrick's Day writing pack and added them to a St. Patrick's Day themed sensory bin,

Our sensory bin also has a mix of colored beans.  I also added some green Easter grass and gold glitter paper strips.  I found both of these from Walmart in their Easter section.

You could also add a tweezers or tongs to have your kiddos grab each card using those tools.
I laminated our word tracing paper, so we can use this over and over.  Plus, it cuts down on copying!

Toddler Tuesday {Preschool Ideas} Week 11

Tuesday, January 8, 2019

It has been awhile since I shared some new ideas for you preschool classroom!
This one is a fun winter shape one!
I cut squares out of white paper and had my kiddo glue the squares in a circle on a piece of construction paper.

Once we had a "circle" we glued an orange triangle in the middle.
We added big circles for yes and smaller circles for the mouth!

Add rectangles for their arms and you've made the cutest snowman!
For older kiddos, you could add a writing piece and have them write about what happened that made their snowman melt.
A great book to add to this project would be "Snowmen at Night".

Simple Center-CVC

Saturday, November 24, 2018
Do you ever need just ONE more center for your literacy block, but don't want to buy a WHOLE pack of them?  Well, I felt the same way, so I created a new line of products that is just that-one more!  They are one center focusing on one skill!

They include a center activity, recording sheet, and a practice worksheet that you can use however you would like.  You can add that sheet as extra practice after your kiddos finish a center or you could use it for morning work or homework!

I have a bunch of centers already made for the past couple holidays (Halloween/fall and Thanksgiving)!

I wanted to share my new Christmas center with you!  This one focuses on CVC words.  Your kiddos will record the CVC word on their recording sheet.

In this pack I have included THREE different recording sheets.  The recording sheets included are write the full word, write the missing vowel, and trace each word.

I added the CVC picture cards and word cards.  I would add the word cards to the center and have your kiddos match the word to the picture then record.

My Thanksgiving Writing Activity

Thursday, November 22, 2018
Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you had a day full of yummy food!
I am jumping on here to share a fun writing activity to do the first few days back!

I have created three different level writing sheets for your students to write about their Thanksgiving!

One sheet has the sentence starter all typed out ("On Thanksgiving I..."), one has it so your kiddos will trace it, and the final one just has the question- "What did you do on Thanksgiving" on the top!

EASY Prep Writing Center

Saturday, September 29, 2018
I wanted to jump on and share an easy prep writing center for you!
I shared this on my Instagram story the other day, but thought I would share it with you here AND add a FREEBIE :)
Writing center can be tough with kiddos who do not know how to write independently just yet.  One thing that I have been doing for years is putting word cards with pictures in my center.  I add our writing paper we use during Writer's Workshop and let them be in charge of their learning.  They can write just the words on the card, a sentence, or they can use the word to spark an idea for a story!
I put a picture on the word card, so the students who are not reading yet will know what the word says.  This cuts down on students coming up to you and asking what it says.

I have created different themed writing centers for the different parts of the year and these include word cards and writing paper.  They also include sentence builders, making lists, and sentence starters/prompts sheets.  The examples here are from my Halloween pack!

I have created FREE word cards for you that includes a writing sheet.  These cards have a food theme, so they can be used throughout the entire year.

Spring Writing Center

Thursday, March 26, 2015
I made the BIG mistake of going to school without a voice yesterday... I teach in a big room split into two, so I share a room with another teacher and it can get noisy at times.  Which isn't a big deal, but when I could barely talk it was impossible.
I ended up going home early (thanks to my amazing team) and took the day off today to recover.
Since I had all this extra time on my hands and couldn't talk, I finally got a chance to get my Spring Writing Center Activities pack done!
This pack follows the same format as my Winter, Valentine's Day, and St. Patrick's Day packs.
I put these Read it, Trace it, Write it, Build it sheets in my writing center each week.  My kiddos know exactly what to do and get practice in more than just writing!

These writing prompts come in 3 different levels.
I like this prompt because you can have fun with it (chocolate cake!) OR use it with your science unit.  This page has you trace the letters then fill in the rest.
The 3rd level has a question and your kiddos have to write the whole thing.
I also included several sheets that have your kiddos creating lists.  These can be used on their own or use it as a planning tool for in the pre-writing stage.

Winter Writing Center

Monday, January 19, 2015
My writing center needed an upgrade, so I created this Winter Writing Center Activities pack!

There are a variety worksheets and word cards to use with a winter theme!
My kiddos really loved the Read, Trace, Write, and Build sheets!
These sheets are perfect because they can be completed independently.  I mixed the sentence up on the bottom, to promote a little reading.  I did have one kiddo put it in the same order they cut it out in...there is always one :)

There are also 10 word cards.  These can be put in your writing center and used in many different ways.  Students can pull out a word and create a sentence using that word, students can write or trace each word, OR throw in some letter beads and they can build the word!
There are 4 writing prompts included in 3 different levels!  There is a fill in the blank sheet, a tracing sheet, and a sheet with one question that would be fully written out on their own.

I have also included a journal cover with writing pages in two different levels.

I would LOVE to give a copy away!
To win:
1. PIN any picture in this post
2.  COMMENT with your email
3.  GOOD LUCK!
Giveaway over!! :)  Congrats Sara and Brittany

Run, Turkey, Run

Monday, November 24, 2014

I have been so MIA on here lately!  I have been posting on Insta, but not on here.  That is changing now! :)
Our principal emailed us in the morning telling us to have fun these two days and I changed up my plans a little- You have to listen to the principal ;)
Today, we did everything we could turkey or as some of my kiddos called it chicken.
We read this book:

So adorable!
After we read this book, we created our own turkeys using paper plates and colored tissue paper!
Save yourself some time and use the die cutter!  These will be the heads.

I cut a paper plate in half and my kiddos glued colored tissue paper onto the plate.  The feathers :)  To make it a little more educational, I had my kiddos count out 20 pieces of tissue paper to glue to their plate.

Once they were done gluing the colored tissue paper, they glued the head right on top.

They turned out so cute, but we are NOT done!
I also threw in some writing and had my kiddos write about where their turkey would hide so they wouldn't be eaten!
The prompt is traceable and then my kinders wrote in where the turkey would hide!

We had a lot of them hide at the zoo.  I thought this picture was just so cute! :)

Enjoy your short week and if you are off...I'm jealous, but ENJOY!

Words Their Way Spelling Centers

Wednesday, January 8, 2014
Today was our first day back from winter break due to EXTREME cold the past couple days!  Luckily, we fell right back into our routines...YES!
I wanted to share our Words Their Way centers!  We have an awkward 20 minutes at the end of the day and I implemented this to get extra practice with our words!  I am new to this program this year, so I have been trying a lot of different things and this seems to have worked the best!
Please ignore this awful picture.  I tried taking it quick during our center time!
I have four groups.  Each group is given their own set of words at their level which they will be tested on the following week.  I color code each group and print the words on matching paper.
We do one center a day and on Friday we have "Free Choice Friday" and they can pick any center.
I had to do this because I have 4 iPads and two groups have more than 4 kiddos.  Luckily, some sweet boys said they will wait and do their iPads on Friday.
In the "Partner Center", the kiddos work with a partner...duh!  Here they are doing spelling bees by asking their partner to spell a word from their notebooks.  Another fun activity is word search.  I give each kiddo a blank word search grid and they fill it in and give it to a partner.

The "Build It Center" has kiddos forming their words with different materials.  Material examples: stamps, play-doh, clothespin letters, or letter tiles.

"iPad center" is a favorite!  I downloaded Writing Wizard one day when they were offering it for free.  Best thing I could of done...I didn't even have iPad's for our classroom at the time.  This week we are just using the letter portion of the app.  Each kiddo picks a word and finds the letter and practices writing each individual letter.  This app is great because I can also go in and add each word list!  Two great activities in one app!

The final center is "Work with the Teacher".  I bet you can guess what we do in that center...  We start by doing our spelling test with our words from the previous week, get new lists, cut, sort, and glue them into our notebooks!
This has really helped my kiddos with their spelling AND reading!  These centers can be adjusted to any spelling program you use too!

Do you use Words their Way?  Do you have any other fun activities to do with the word sorts?
